The Houdon Statue of George Washington

The Capitol is the location of the famous statue of George Washington, sculpted by Jean-Antoine Houdon from life.  It was installed in the Rotunda on May 14, 1796 and is thought to have been in place nearly continuously ever since.  The inscription on the base is by James Madison.
